Starlings helps real ale lovers quaff the best of British for Maris Otter festival

Grain merchants H Banham celebrated the 50th birthday of its barley cultivar Maris Otter and its unique contribution to British real ale this year with the help of TPN Member Starlings Transport.

Banham arranged a festival to bring together 50 new speciality beers specifically created to celebrate Maris Otter from brewers around the UK and abroad. Maris Otter is an important type of barley for brewers; most cultivars are only used for a few years but Maris Otter has been a staple ingredient of British and international ales for decades and is known as Norfolk’s ‘super-grain’.

Starlings organised the logistics for the event, arranging collection of five barrels from each brewer through the TPN network and delivering them all to the Norwich concert venue ‘Open’ in time for the September event.

“The event was great,” says MD Mark Banham. “Starlings was recommended by Norfolk Brewhouse; David Holliday uses them to ship his own beer.

“They did very well,” he says, acknowledging the difficulties of unloading large amounts of beer from a truck parked in a main road in Norwich. “We gave them a list of all the brewers and they made it happen.”
