A 23 year old HGV driver has realised his dream of acquiring his Class 1 licence and securing permanent work with TPN Teesside.
Samrat Ricci had funded his Class 2 licence and been working for an agency, but was unsure how to find his dream job of permanent work with a logistics company. He contacted TPN Teesside depot manager Mathew Bruce to ask for advice.
Mat recognised Samrat’s passion and determination. However, new drivers often experience the ‘chicken and egg’ paradox that it is hard to win a permanent position without experience and impossible to accrue the relevant experience without a permanent position.Â
Mat’s solution was to offer Samrat work experience at TPN Teesside while he worked on gaining his Class 1 licence. Samrat shadowed drivers, and learned about the daily activity of a logistics operation.Â
Mat says: “Watching Samrat’s development and passion to achieve his goals has been refreshing and encouraging.”
Samrat passed his test and drove as a fully qualified artic driver for the first time last week. “It’s my first day in a big boy’s truck,” he says. “I’m living my dream.’
The logistics industry has both a driver shortage and a profound need for young drivers to join the sector.Â
