TPN Member Delivered has put its 13 of its employed drivers at its Reading depot through a full-day driver development course by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents as part of its ongoing commitment to road safety. It has also invested in a Rospa driver theory course for 17 of its drivers in Slough.
Transport manager Paul Hopwood says: “Our road safety record is already very good because our employed drivers are very experienced. We think it’s important not to take that for granted though, and so used the course as a chance to update their skills, their awareness of best practice and perhaps correct any bad habits the trainer may have noticed.â€
The driver development course takes a full day and involves driver assessment and a thorough session based on the roads the drivers most often use in their area. It also counts towards one of the five days of statutory training HGV drivers must undergo for their Driver Certificate of Professional Competence.
Keith Bell, quality manager for RoSPA Fleet Safety, says: “For most of us, driving is the most dangerous work activity we do.  The driver development course from RoSPA is designed to help each individual develop their driving, and to consider both their own and other road users’ attitude and behaviours…[and] how these impact on driving risk.â€
