Why Relationships, Not Just Consolidation, Will Define the Winners
By Michael Conroy, Chief Executive Officer, TPN

UK pallet networks are unique. While advances in technology, sector consolidation and network investment will undoubtedly help shape the sector’s future, the long-term success of any pallet network still comes down to one thing: its members.

The networks that thrive over the next decade will not simply be those with the biggest hubs, the largest volumes or the most advanced systems. They will be the networks that are best at attracting, retaining and supporting high-quality members.

That means creating genuine commercial opportunity, helping members grow their businesses, investing in services that add value beyond pallet distribution and building strong personal and business relationships across the network.

In an increasingly digital world, trust, collaboration and partnership become even more important. The strongest networks are not built on contracts alone. They are built on shared ambition, mutual success, and long-term relationships.

This is why the recent acquisition of UPN by the owners of Pallet-Track is such an important moment for our sector. While much of the commentary has focused on ownership and scale, I believe the real story is what it tells us about the future direction of the UK pallet-network market.

The acquisition matters because it’s a significant vote of confidence in the pallet-network model. Investors do not commit substantial capital to sectors they believe are in structural decline. They invest in industries where they see growth potential, competitive advantages and opportunities to create value. The pallet sector possesses all three.

The UK economy continues to demand more frequent deliveries, shorter lead times and greater flexibility and customers increasingly want national coverage combined with local service. At the same time, rising environmental pressures are making consolidated freight networks more attractive than ever.

These trends play directly to the strengths of pallet networks.

Despite advances in technology, the underlying economics of pallet networks remain remarkably simple. Freight volumes create density, density creates efficiency, efficiency improves profitability and profitability enables investment. Investment improves service, which in turn attracts more volume and so the cycle repeats.

This growth flywheel remains the most powerful competitive advantage available to any network.

The challenge for every network is therefore not simply to grow volume. It is to grow quality volume, improve density and create a sustainable platform for future investment.

Technology is becoming a critical differentiator with customers increasingly expecting real-time visibility, seamless integration, predictive updates and simple digital experiences.

Tomorrow’s market leaders will combine great operations with great technology, but technology alone is not enough. Technology can help a customer track a pallet, but it can’t replace trust, it can’t build loyalty and it can’t create long-term partnerships. Those advantages are still created by people.

I’ve thought long and hard about the next few years and how things will look by 2030.

First, consolidation will continue. The UPN transaction is unlikely to be the last significant deal in the sector. Scale will become increasingly important as technology and infrastructure investment requirements continue to rise.

Second, technology will increasingly differentiate networks. Customers will judge providers not only on service performance but also on how easy they are to do business with.

Third, artificial intelligence will become a standard management tool across the sector. Forecasting, planning, routing and capacity management will increasingly become predictive rather than reactive.

Fourth, density will become the industry’s most important economic measure. The most successful networks will be those that convert growth into productivity, efficiency and profitability.

Fifth, sustainability will become a genuine commercial advantage. Networks that can demonstrate measurable environmental benefits will increasingly win customer preference.

However, one thing is missing. Most articles about the future of logistics focus on technology, automation and investment. All are important, but they often miss what makes pallet networks unique.

At their heart, pallet networks are partnership businesses. Success depends upon attracting great members, supporting existing members and creating an environment in which members can prosper. The strongest networks do not simply move freight, they create opportunity. They help members grow revenue, provide access to customers, support operational improvement and share best practice. Most importantly, they build relationships.

The future winners in this sector will not necessarily be those with the largest market share. They will be those with the strongest member engagement, the highest levels of trust and the clearest sense of shared purpose.

At TPN, this belief sits at the centre of our strategy. Yes, technology, investment and volume all matter, but member success matters most and our role is to help members grow their businesses.

That means creating better opportunities, improving service, investing in technology, strengthening customer propositions and ensuring members see genuine value from being part of our network.

The stronger our members become, the stronger TPN becomes.

The acquisition of UPN will undoubtedly change the competitive landscape and it is evidence of a sector that is evolving, attracting investment and preparing for the future.

The best years of the pallet-network industry are still ahead of us. However, the next generation of winners will be defined by their ability to combine scale with service, technology with trust and investment with partnership.

Ultimately, the future of pallet networks will be determined by people. Technology may power the future, but great partnerships will continue to drive it.

Strong partnerships are what keep a pallet network moving. Sometimes, the biggest impact comes from the Partners who step up when they’re needed, take on more than is expected of them and do whatever it takes to support those around them.

That’s exactly what the Networker’s Award recognises; presented to a long-term TPN Partner at this year’s Gala & Awards Dinner, hosted by Colin Murray.

Nominated by TPN colleagues, HT Gardner were recognised for their commitment to the wider network, including supporting additional area for an extended period and helping fellow Partners wherever they could.

While recognising a single winner, the award reflects the qualities that help make a network successful. HT Gardner stepped up when they were needed most, making them the perfect recipient for this year’s award.

Huge congratulations to the entire HT Gardner team.

At the heart of every successful pallet network is the commitment to working together.

At this year’s Gala & Awards Dinner, hosted by Colin Murray, we gave our Partners the opportunity to recognise each other’s hard work and dedication to the network, with the Partner of the Year award. We made a single request: nominate the TPN Partner you believe has gone above and beyond to support the network in the last year.

The volume and quality of nominations made choosing one winner impossible so, this year, we awarded two Partners of the Year.

GCN Scotland’s commitment to supporting outside of their area and taking on extra workloads were highlighted, as well as the friendliness of their staff, and their willing to help in any way possible.

Riva South were praised for their communication and reliability, as well as their happy, cheery staff who go out of their way to brighten people’s day.

The Partner of the Year award is about more than just operational performance. It’s a recognition of the relationships, support and commitment that help make the network stronger for everyone.

Huge congratulations to both winners, and thank you to everyone who took the time to submit a nomination, and to those who joined us at TPN Noir, our Gala & Awards Dinner, to celebrate.

Congratulations are in order for TPN Partner, Riva South, who have been awarded The Road to Net Zero Award 2026 in recognition of their outstanding contribution to DP World’s Low Carbon Truck Programme (LCTP).

The award was presented for achieving 100% HVO withdrawal during the first payout period. Their engagement and collaboration throughout the Low Carbon Truck Programme have played an important role in showcasing how hauliers can successfully adopt alternative fuels and contribute to the industry’s decarbonisation journey. The progress made is a reflection of the dedication and support of the entire team at Riva South.

DP World UK’s Low Carbon Truck Programme helps HGV operators using London Gateway and Southampton ports reduce transport emissions while preparing for the future of zero-emission freight.

The programme is delivered to members in two phases. Phase one offers discounted access to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), and phase two is EVITA – the Electric Vehicle Introduction and Transition Accelerator – a practical electric truck rental trial designed to help hauliers test, learn and adapt in real-world operating conditions.

It’s great to see our Partners being recognised for their commitment to improving the industry, and we’re proud to have worked with Riva South for more than two decades.
